ACTION ITEMS
May 9-13 is the final week of the MO legislative session!

Medicaid Expansion Still Under Attack by Legislature HJR117 would (again) amend the constitution to allow the legislature to cut off funding and/or implement work requirements for Medicaid Expansion —This has been passed by the House and is now assigned to the Senate Government Accountability Committee. If passed it would go on the ballot as a Constitutional Amendment. Contact Caleb Rowden!

SAVE THE BALLOT INITIATIVE! HJR79 has passed the House and two Senate Committees. It needs to be killed on the Senate floor. This bill would make it a requirement that a ballot initiative must have 66.6% to pass. Read the summary at
https://house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills221/sumpdf/HJR0079P.pdf
Please call or email Senator Caleb Rowden and ask him to leave the ballot initiative process alone.

HB1860: Please contact Caleb Rowden and ask him to vote against or not bring up for a vote. This bill cuts unemployment benefits to 8 weeks, one of the lowest of any state. This bill ignores the skills or lack of skills of our citizens and unemployment variations in different parts of the state.

HJR138 Reproductive Rights assault— Constitutional amendment:
“Nothing in the constitution shall be construed to secure or protect the right to abortion, or require the funding of an abortion by taxpayers or any other means.”
This passed out of the Special Committee on Public Policy 4/28/22 and was referred to the Rules Committee.

Please contact your state representative and ask that they vote against HB 2118 which gives shooters benefit of the doubt relating to self-defense (Make Murder Legal bill)

Caleb Rowden (573) 751-3931 Caleb.Rowden@senate.mo.gov

  • Very close to passage! Please contact Senator Caleb Rowden and ask that he vote against the Senate Substitute for HB 1878, which modifies the voting law in several terrible ways, including requiring the Secretary of State to audit local voter rolls and demand they be purged. Among other things:
Eliminates non-photo ID (the voter registration card and Student ID)–not being able to use these ID’s has been ruled unconstitutional by MO Supreme Court.

  • No-excuse absentee voting is limited to those who can appear in person at the election office with non-expired photo ID.

  • Absentee voting by mail is limited.

  • Eliminating electronic voting machines can present barriers to persons with disabilities & delay tabulation results.

  • Not requiring poll workers, challengers, or watchers to live and be registered in the district increases the potential for intimidation.

  • Nullifies federal election “guidance” and funding (this provision would expire on 2/1/25 after a new federal administration is in power).

LWV action items
SB 667–disqualifies Planned Parenthood from receiving any MO Medicaid funds even for services unrelated to abortion. Since the federal government requires payment to any willing provider, this would endanger MO’s federa Medicaid funding. It would allow any taxpayer to sue to enforce the law.
Please contact Caleb Rowden and ask that he vote against SB667
